What is Ozone Therapy ?

Ozone therapy is a treatment method that uses ozone gas. Ozone gas is a transparent, colorless gas consisting of three oxygen atoms. (You can smell it after stormy weather, at high altitudes, or at the seaside). Unlike the stable form of the oxygen molecule (O2), ozone (O3) is an unstable molecule. It has a distinctive odor. The term “ozone” derives from the Greek word “ozein,” meaning “to smell.”

BRIEF HISTORY

In 1840, it was discovered by the German scientist Christian Friedrich Schönbein, professor at the University of Basel in Switzerland.
In 1860, drinking water in Monaco started to be disinfected with ozone. Ozone was found to kill bacteria and viruses. It was also observed to destroy the bad taste in water.
In 1902 Clarke H.J. used ozone in anemia, cancer, diabetes, flu and morphine poisoning.
In 1980, Horst Kief treated an AIDS patient with ozone for the first time.
In 1992, it was used in burn treatment in Russia.
In 1998, Op.Dr.Muhammer Velidedeoğlu started ozone applications in Istanbul.
In 2011, Prof. Dr. Avni Babacan established the Ozone Center at Gazi University.

Ozone is applied in addition to other treatments and belongs to the complementary treatment group. Ozone therapy can improve or significantly improve many diseases. In order to quickly learn about the latest innovations in ozone therapy, many therapists in Europe have come together to form the “Medical Society for Ozone Application in Prevention and Therapy”. The aim of this group is to improve and advance the knowledge of doctors and patients on this subject. The exchange of information has accelerated and developed over the years. Medical ozone is completely safe, practical, effective and inexpensive when applied in accordance with the rules.

Medical ozone is always used as a mixture of pure ozone and pure oxygen. Depending on the application, the ozone concentration varies. A doctor trained in ozone therapy determines the dose the patient will receive according to the patient’s condition.

Effects of Ozonotherapy

  • Ozone is a strong antimicrobial agent. There are no bacteria, viruses or fungi resistant to ozone.
  • Regulates the immune system. Thanks to this effect called immunomodulatory effect, it ensures that the immune system works in a balanced and healthy way.
  • Accelerates metabolism.
  • It supports circulation and is used in the treatment of circulatory system disorders.
  • In general terms, it increases the body’s oxygen capacity, enabling all tissues and cells to function better.
  • Supports the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

  • Ozone therapy is a treatment method that utilizes the two powerful potentials of the human body, namely “antioxidant” and “anti-inflammatory” potentials, and strengthens the body against diseases by causing an alarm reaction throughout the body. Research conducted over the past twenty years has shown that ozone therapy contributes to the human body’s own healing potentials in many ways.

How Is Ozone Therapy Performed?

Major autohemotherapy: In this application, the ozone/oxygen mixture mixed with blood reacts rapidly with molecules and cells and initiates a series of reactions. In each session, a vein is opened and 100 ml, or one teacup, of blood is drawn into a specially designed disposable glass bottle for this procedure. After being mixed with ozone, it is returned to the body through the same vein.

The effects of this treatment administered via the bloodstream can be summarized as follows:

It helps red blood cells, which carry oxygen in the blood, deliver more oxygen to the tissues that need it. This makes it a great help in solving problems caused by “insufficient blood supply” resulting from all kinds of hard-to-heal wounds, vascular blockages, and circulatory disorders.
Oxygen is a molecule of vital importance to our bodies; without it, we face life-threatening danger within minutes. . Since our bodies cannot store oxygen like food, we must take in oxygen throughout our lives. Interestingly, although oxygen is so vital, it also causes the formation of oxidizing (harmful) oxygen radicals, which cause disease and aging. For this reason, scientists refer to oxygen as a “vital poison.” We cannot live without oxygen, but we must also protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the radicals produced by oxygen. For this reason, our bodies have an “antioxidant” defense system that cleanses (neutralizes) these radicals. Ozone therapy strongly supports this protective system, both increasing the amount of oxygen used by tissues and significantly contributing to the neutralization of harmful oxygen radicals. In many diseases, particularly chronic conditions such as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, the antioxidant defense system is weakened. Ozone therapy helps neutralize the effects of harmful oxygen radicals by strengthening this system.

Minor autohaemotherapy: 3-5 ml of ozonated blood is administered by intramuscular injection. It is beneficial for strengthening the immune system and treating allergic diseases.

Ozone bagging: External ozone therapy refers to the administration of ozone gas in a closed system by circulating it in special plastic bags on the feet, legs, or other parts of the body. Since ozone does not affect dry areas, the area of the body to be treated is moistened with water. This method is used to treat ulcers, wounds, cold sores, and infected areas.

Rectal ozone: Although this method may not sound pleasant, it is not uncomfortable. This is because the ozone gas is absorbed by the intestinal surface without the patient feeling any discomfort. Additionally, the patient can administer this treatment themselves. This method is commonly used for intestinal disorders and helps revitalize the body. Its primary effect is to cleanse the intestinal tract. This allows beneficial bacteria introduced from outside to settle more easily within the intestines, leading to a healthier digestive system.

The second effect is that ozone is absorbed by the inner surface of the intestine, strengthening the intestinal muscles. This can gradually improve conditions such as spastic colon, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas.

The third effect is that when absorbed by the blood vessels surrounding the intestines, it ozonates the blood contained within these vessels.

Since all of this blood is transported to the liver within seconds, our liver tissue is cleansed and strengthened with ozone gas. Improvement in liver enzymes and reduction in fatty liver are expected.

Intra-articular ozone: Ozone can be injected into the joint by trained professionals. This method is used for joints with painful inflammatory diseases.

Ozone puncture: In cases of problematic conditions such as wrinkles, skin blemishes, acne, cellulite, and scarring, ozone molecules are injected into the affected areas using very fine needles.

CONDITIONS THAT PATIENTS SHOULD BE AWARE OF:

  • If you are currently taking medication (blood pressure medication, birth control pills, etc.), we recommend that you take your medication 4 hours before or 4 hours after ozone therapy.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages at least 8 hours before ozone therapy. If possible, do not drink alcohol during your treatment.
  • If you are pregnant, do not undergo ozone therapy during your pregnancy.
  • Do not take anything containing vitamin C one hour before and one hour after ozone therapy.
  • If you are currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment, we recommend that you wait at least 4 days after the treatment before receiving ozone therapy.
  • Do not come to treatment on an empty stomach. Eat something light before coming.

Who is not eligible?

Ozone is a reliable and natural treatment method. When applied correctly, it has almost no side effects.

However;

  • Favism (GL-6-F dehydrogenase enyzme deficiency)
  • Hyperthyroidism characterized by excessive hormone levels
  • In cases of severe anemia, bleeding, and coagulation disorders
  • In chronic and recurrent pancreatitis
  • New advanced heart attacks and strokes

Uses of Ozone

Ozone in influenza

Ozone therapy boosts the immune system’s defense cells against all microbes. It also has a direct lethal effect on these microbes. At the same time, it is a treatment that partially or completely cures existing diseases in humans, improves quality of life, and has a detoxifying effect that helps remove harmful waste from the body.

Ozone kills all viruses

What is Ozone Therapy ? How Is Ozone Therapy Performed?

It can be destroyed, but each virus has a different sensitivity to ozone due to differences in their structure. Viruses with a lipid layer called an envelope on their outer surface are particularly sensitive to ozone. This is because ozone molecules have the ability to break down lipids. The influenza virus has an envelope on its outer surface, making it one of the most ozone-sensitive viruses.

Ozone reduces or eliminates viruses to a significant extent by directly affecting them and by creating substances in the body that destroy them. Since microorganisms do not have antioxidant systems, ozone therapy is effective against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. An increase in ozone release has been observed in the body with ozone therapy. It is used for the treatment of viral diseases.

In an ozone therapy course, in addition to the method of ozonating the blood, it is essential to include the method known as the ozone vaccine. The ozone vaccine is a very simple procedure performed with 5cc of blood and is highly effective in strengthening the immune system

Ozone therapy for anti-aging and energy boosting

Ozone therapy is used for anti-aging (reversing aging) and revitalization. It can be applied to completely healthy individuals to delay aging, boost energy, and protect against diseases. It increases not only the body’s energy but also the brain’s energy, enhancing memory. It serves as a powerful form of support for students preparing for exams, high-paced business professionals, mentally active individuals, and athletes. With ozone therapy, people experience less mental and physical fatigue.
Additionally, elderly individuals respond very well to ozone treatment. Beyond all its clinical advantages, ozone therapy improves the utilization of oxygen by tissues, activates the immune system, and stimulates the body’s own antioxidants and cells that fight free radicals. Furthermore, it has positive effects on circulatory disorders in the brain.
Ozone therapy is also used to improve quality of life. The loss of health is often caused by waste products (free radicals) generated during cellular processes. When these substances are not eliminated sufficiently and promptly from the body, they turn into harmful toxins.

What is Ozone Therapy ? How Is Ozone Therapy Performed? With ozone therapy, which aims to promote healthy aging and staying youthful, it is possible to preserve your youth and maintain vitality for many years! Of course, there are many things to do to achieve this goal and one of them is ozone therapy.
The goal of anti-aging is to slow down the aging process as much as possible and to ensure that the body ages healthily as a whole both physically and functionally. All the benefits aimed for in anti-aging can be achieved through ozone therapy.
Thanks to ozone, oxygen is more efficiently utilized by the tissues, and the immune system is activated. As a result, the body’s own antioxidants and other cells that fight free radicals are also stimulated.
Just like people, cells need to breathe. For this to happen, oxygen molecules must be present in the cellular environment. Due to aging, many cells suffer from long-term oxygen deficiency. After ozone therapy, these cells are able to perform their functions at a much higher capacity.
In addition to its anti-aging effects, ozone significantly enhances physical endurance and improves quality of life. It also promotes skin regeneration and rejuvenation.

Ozone therapy for weight loss

Ozone therapy is a method suggested to aid in weight loss. When administered intravenously, ozone therapy can increase the body’s metabolism by up to 40%. A faster metabolism leads to increased fat burning.
In cellulite treatment, ozone works through multiple mechanisms. It interacts with fatty acids accumulated under the skin, helping to break down fat chains and eliminate them from the body. It is also believed to improve oxygen deficiency a key issue in cellulite and enhance blood circulation in affected areas, thereby normalizing fat tissue metabolism.
Moreover, ozone therapy helps regulate insulin and blood glucose levels, which can reduce sugar cravings and prevent excessive carbohydrate consumption. It may also help break insulin resistance, promoting better utilization of glucose and assisting the body in burning sugar more effectively.

Ozone lipolysis for localized fat reduction

In this procedure, ozone gas is injected into the fatty tissues of targeted areas using very fine mesotherapy needles. This technique is particularly effective in areas where stubborn fat tends to accumulate, such as the abdomen and hips. Ozone injections help convert stored fat into a form that the body can more easily burn.
When combined with daily 30–45-minute walks or cardio exercises and adequate water intake, it is possible for individuals to reduce fat in these areas. Sagging is generally not observed in treated regions, even as fat melts away.
Ozone not only promotes the breakdown of fat cells but also stimulates cell regeneration and collagen production, helping to tighten and tone the skin.

Ozone therapy for chronic fatigue

People who live in enclosed spaces often experience low oxygen levels. Additionally, various other factors can cause poor oxygenation of the body, leading to chronic fatigue. If no matter how much you sleep you don’t feel rested, if you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning, if you have no motivation to do anything, and if you tend to avoid physical effort, you might be experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome.
You may benefit from ozone therapy, which can positively impact your energy levels, psychological well-being, and cognitive function.

Ozone therapy in cancer

Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Otto Warburg, in his award-winning research;

  • The fundamental cause of cancer is anaerobic life (the ability of tumor cells to survive without oxygen, whereas normal cells require oxygen for aerobic life),
  • It’s believed that oncogenes (tumor genes) in the body can be activated by factors such as stress, pollution, radiation, and lack of oxygen, thereby initiating cancer,
  • It’s believed that oxygen deficiency facilitates the spread of cancer, and cancer cells cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment. When sufficient oxygen is provided, the tumor tissue’s blood supply is disrupted, and tumor cells die.
  • It has been determined that ozone, in addition to its direct tumor-killing effect (oxidative/burning effect), also has a complementary immune-system-strengthening effect.
  • It has been determined that ozone is successfully used as a complementary therapy by preventing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and increasing their tumor-killing effects.

Ozone in Liver Diseases

  • It helps in the functions of liver cells, normalizing carbohydrate, fat, and sugar levels.
  • It’s used as a supportive therapy by promoting the regeneration of liver cells, making it beneficial for liver insufficiency and fatty liver disease.
  • It helps to minimize the damage to the liver caused by liver inflammations, medications, and chemicals.

Ozone in Muscle, Nerve, Bone, and Rheumatic Joint Diseases

In muscle diseases and traumas (such as accidents and sports injuries), ozone accelerates healing, regulates circulation, prevents nerve damage, and facilitates nerve repair. Since it also strengthens muscles, it’s used in chronic muscle and nerve diseases.

  • In general, ozone therapy is recommended to be used for complementary purposes in conjunction with physical therapy or other treatments.
  • Ozone is also used in many painful conditions that can cause functional limitations, such as joint inflammations, osteoarthritis, joint destruction, and osteoporosis.
  • In cases of osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis) where bone deformation has not yet developed, it has been observed that intra-articular ozone injections, in addition to other ozone therapy methods, help alleviate pain by both creating an air cushion within the joint and reducing joint swelling. Furthermore, it has been found to assist in the repair of cartilage tissue.
  • In diseases resulting from an immune system deviation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, rapid improvements are observed when ozone is used alongside other treatments, as it regulates the immune system.
  • Furthermore, it is successfully used in fibromyalgia, a widespread disease characterized by intense muscle pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.

Ozone in Neurological Diseases:

Ozone therapy can be used in neurological diseases by increasing brain oxygenation and acting as a vascular regulator.

  • In Headaches and Tension-Type Migraine Pains,
  • Ozone therapy has positive effects in cases of reduced cerebral blood flow or oxygenation, and in related neurological diseases characterized by symptoms such as decreased physical capacity, difficulty walking, and dizziness due to circulatory disorders in the brain.
  • It is used as a supportive treatment in diseases such as polyneuropathy, myotonia, muscular dystrophy, ALS, dementia, and MS.

Ozone in Respiratory System Diseases and Asthma

  • With its immunomodulatory (immune system regulating) and germ-killing effects, ozone therapy helps in the treatment of diseases like ASTHMA, BRONCHITIS, PNEUMONIA, TUBERCULOSIS, and COPD. It aids in reducing medication dependency and alleviating shortness of breath, leading to less severe and less frequent allergy and asthma attacks. Particularly successful results are observed in asthma and allergic bronchitis.

Ozone in Heart Diseases

In all heart diseases, ozone therapy is used to support other treatment methods.

  • In Heart Failure,
  • In Myocardial Diseases (Heart Muscle Diseases),
  • In cases of blocked coronary arteries, ozone therapy is effective by increasing oxygenation, reducing intravascular pressure, decreasing blood viscosity, regulating heart conduction and thus rhythm, and reducing the load on the heart.

What is a Wound?

  • A wound is a surgical or traumatic disruption of tissue integrity.
  • Wound healing is a normal tissue response that attempts to restore injured tissue to its original state.
  • Wound healing is a normal tissue response that aims to restore injured tissue to its normal state.

The organism’s natural response is to close wounds as quickly as possible and restore the normal continuity of structures. This process is called wound healing.

Wound healing follows the same biological and biochemical principles in all tissues.

Diabetic Foot and Its Causes

Diabetic foot ulcers, a significant complication of Diabetes Mellitus, develop on the negative ground created by diabetes. These are serious cases that can lead to limb, and even life, loss due to non-healing wounds and gangrene. 15% of all diabetics experience a diabetic foot problem at least once in their lives, and 50% of non-traumatic amputations are due to diabetic foot. Diabetic foot wounds are also prone to infection because the immune response is impaired.

  • Vascular Damage (Angiopathy)

Previously, it was thought that diabetic patients experienced damage in their capillaries, leading to wound development and non-healing wounds or incision lines. However, studies have shown that this is not accurate. These patients do have vascular problems, but they are in large-diameter vessels, not the small ones. Vascular occlusions that develop in diabetic feet generally occur in the large vessels just below the knee.

  • Changes in Blood Chemistry (Hemoreological)

In diabetic patients, just like in all other systems, there’s a partial impairment in the function of blood and immune cells. Blood cells become stiffer, making it difficult for them to pass through capillaries, which in turn disrupts the oxygen transport system. The functional deficiency in immune cells has increased susceptibility to infections.

  • Damage to Peripheral Nerves (Neuropathy)

In diabetics, the primary reason for increased pressure sensitivity is nerve swelling. A large amount of glucose sugar entering the nerve tissue converts into sorbitol, another type of sugar. Due to its chemical properties, sorbitol attracts water, causing the nerve tissue to swell with water. The hypothesis that a swollen nerve can easily be subjected to pressure in already narrow areas has long been known.
The second reason is the impaired transport system in diabetic nerves. Normally, information exchange between the nerve body and its end occurs through the transport of chemical substances within the nerve via structures called tubulins. In diabetics, this transport system is impaired. If a nerve has been damaged due to compression in a particular area, the necessary materials for its repair need to be transported to that site via this system. If the transport system is compromised, the nerve can no longer repair itself, and even slight pressure can lead to severe symptoms.

Ozone Therapy for Chronic Wounds

Treatment is continued by administering ozone therapy both intravenously (major), intramuscularly (minor), and through ozone bagging to the affected limb with the wound.

Benefits of Major Therapy

  • SOD (Sitokrom Oksidaz Dismutaz) Activation.
  • This enzyme prevents the destructive effect of superoxide radicals that emerge in chronic inflammation.
  • It increases TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor beta). This is a crucial factor in wound healing and the repair mechanism. TGF-β facilitates the rearrangement of the matrix, including integrins.
  • Increases Tissue Oxygenation.
  • Helps in Vascular Proliferation.
  • Helps regulate sugar metabolism in diabetics.
  • It helps in fighting infections by strengthening the immune system.

Benefits of the Bagging Method

  • Anti-microbial effect
  • Mechanical debridement of necrotic tissue with ozonated water
  • Creation of an Aerobic Environment with Ozone-Oxygen

(Especially in anaerobic infections)

Are there any side effects of ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy is a very safe treatment when performed by experienced professionals and does not cause any side effects.

In ozone therapy, the major treatment application lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, while the minor treatment application takes about 30 seconds. Of course, your doctor decides which of these procedures will be performed. Therefore, the duration varies depending on the individual’s condition. On average, an ozone therapy session lasts around 30 minutes.

The mechanism of action of ozone therapy enhances the delivery of oxygen which is essential for vitality to the cells more effectively, and it improves the cells’ ability to utilize the oxygen that reaches them. Well oxygenated tissues and cells function better, and system malfunctions are corrected.

  • Uncontrolled Hyperthyroidism (in cases of overactive thyroid gland)
  • Those who have favism disease, which is associated with an enzyme deficiency (G6P Dehydrogenase) in red blood cells,
  • Those with severe anemia and blood-related disorders (such as hemophilia, bleeding and clotting disorders, etc.),
  • In patients with recent myocardial infarction and those suffering from a stroke with ongoing active bleeding,
  • During pregnancy, especially in the first trimester (the first three months), no treatment should be performed unless absolutely necessary. Although ozone therapy has no known harmful effects, it is not recommended during pregnancy because this period is a critical developmental stage for the baby.
Do you have to be sick to receive ozone therapy, or can healthy individuals also undergo the treatment?
People without any health problems can receive ozone therapy purely for preventive purposes and to strengthen their immune system. Ozone therapy provides detoxification, anti-aging benefits, and improvements in physical and cognitive capacity. Additionally, it strengthens the immune system.
Symptoms of oxygen deficiency: The main symptoms of oxygen deficiency include headache, fatigue, tiredness, decreased work capacity, reduced zest for life, premature aging, and deterioration of vital organs. If you experience these symptoms, it means you may benefit from ozone therapy.
  • Poor breathing (such as in chronic bronchitis, asthma, etc.)
  • Refined foods,
  • Smoking,
  • Lack of exercise,
  • Environmental pollution,
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning (especially for those living in large and crowded cities),
  • Decrease in the natural oxygen levels in the environment.

Ozone therapy is preferred for common sexual dysfunctions in men because it helps regulate circulation.
